Ganglion cysts are non-cancerous lumps that develop on the joints or the tendons of the wrists of a person or elsewhere. However, they may also develop on the feet or ankles. The shape of the ganglion cyst is mostly oval or round and it contains a gel-like fluid. The size of these cysts may change or even disappear, but some may be painful because of the pressure on surrounding structures such as blood vessels, tendons, or nerves.
How ganglion cysts are treated
If the patient feels pain or discomfort, the cyst may be aspirated in the clinic. However, there is a chance of recurrence even after aspiration. Ganglion cysts can also be excised surgically along with a part of the tendon sheath or joint capsule to reduce the risk of recurrence.
